Organizational Description:
Zeum is a not-for profit, community-based art and technology museum serving children, youth and families in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Zeum is the only museum in the Bay Area where individuals of all ages, backgrounds, communities and learning styles combine hands-on use of animation, music and sound production, digital art and live performance with the power of their imaginations to create high quality stories, movies, music, art and more. Ideally located in the heart of downtown's South of Market district, Zeum is housed in a unique 34,000 square foot facility and theater on the rooftop of San Francisco's Yerba Buena Gardens.
Position Description:
The Director of Programs and Experience (DPE) is a key leadership position responsible for the overall strategic vision, management and integration of Zeum's education programs and exhibit experiences. The DPE provides guidance and support to the team of individuals who are responsible for generating the Zeum experience with the highest level of excellence. Working closely with the Exhibits Manager, the DPE is responsible for overseeing the development of permanent and changing exhibits and expanding Zeum's platform for media distribution. In partnership with a Senior Educator and team of six Educators, the DPE oversees the development and delivery of Zeum's School Field Trip Program, ZeumMaster Program for teens, Weekend Workshops and Zeum University. In addition, the DPE oversees the department's community outreach and engagement strategy, programming and activities.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Oversees and provides vision and strategic direction for all education programs and exhibit experiences with emphasis on continuing to strengthen the Zeum experience
- Fosters relationships with strategic partners that complement Zeum's education and outreach goals
- Working in collaboration with the CEO and Director of Development & Marketing, helps to raise funds and develop broad support for Zeum's programs and initiatives
- Builds credibility and a reputation for excellence for Zeum's exhibits and education programs
Management Responsibilities:
- Provides leadership, guidance and support to direct reports (Exhibits Manager, IT Manager, ZeumMasters Program Manager and Senior Educator) in a manner that promotes collaboration, open communication, creative problem-solving and professional development
- Ensures that Zeum's mission and strategic goals are integrated in all programs and exhibits
- Oversees the administration of the department, including budgets, work plans, evaluations, contracts, personnel-related issues, hiring and directing key program staff
- Provides leadership, expertise and inspiration to Zeum's Leadership Team and supports fundraising, marketing and special events as needed.
Qualifications:
- MA/MFA/MBA or equivalent desired
- Minimum of 5 years professional experience in museum/arts administration, exhibition and program development, and/or education
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Must be an exceptional role model and coach with a demonstrated ability to lead a team to accomplish goals in a supportive, collaborative and empowering manner
- Excellent strategic planning and problem-solving skills - must have a positive, creative approach to both and be an imaginative, flexible and resourceful individual
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of San Francisco's community of cultural/youth-oriented institutions and expertise communicating and working with diverse audiences and learning styles
- Demonstrated ability to apply the use of multimedia arts and technology to programming and education in ways that are relevant to children, youth and families
