Concerned about the media’s influence on your kids?
Childhood Matters, Nuestros Niños and Zeum join forces to help parents and kids get smart about media and marketing. - FREE presentation on Sunday, July 10 at the Zeum Theater

24 June 2005—SAN FRANCISCO, CA: Movies. TV. Rap music. Video games. The Internet. Today, kids are bombarded with more media messages than ever before – not all of them things parents would want them to see.

Recognizing the dilemma facing parents, Childhood Matters and Nuestros Niños, the Bay Area’s weekly parenting radio shows, are partnering with Zeum, San Francisco’s hands-on arts and technology museum, to host honest discussions about the influence of media on children, particularly those in the vulnerable pre-teen years.

These programs, presented in both English and Spanish, will be recorded before a live studio audience on Sunday, July 10 in the Zeum Theater. Guests for Media Matters: The Impact of Media on Children and Pre-Teens include nationally-renowned comedian and youth advocate Michael Pritchard and Alisa MacDonnell, Communications Director with Common Sense Media; the program will then be broadcast on 98.1 KISS-FM the following Sunday, July 17. Medios de Comunicación: El Impacto de los Medios en Niños y Pre-Adolescentes, featuring guest Celina Rodriguez , the news anchor of Telemundo, will air on KLOK Cumbia 1170 AM and on KBBF, La Nuestra 89.1 FM on Sunday, August 7.

“Our culture is a media-centric one,” says Rona Renner, RN, host of Childhood Matters and Executive Director of Childhood Matters Inc., the company that produces both radio shows. “It’s unrealistic for most parents to simply shut the TV off or forbid all video games. But parents can set limits and communicate with their children about what they’re seeing and hearing.” Renner, known as “Nurse Rona” at KISS, is a well-known local parent educator; as the mother of four, she also brings real-world parenting experience to the program.

“Latino parents not only have to deal with the usual media concerns – inappropriate marketing, violence, encouraging obesity – but also with unhealthy media stereotypes. At least in mainstream media, Latinos and Hispanic communities aren’t always portrayed in the most positive light,” says Marisol Muñoz-Kiehne, PhD, host of Nuestros Niños. “Doctora Marisol” has more than 15 years experience as a clinical psychologist, most recently through the Community Mental Health Division of Marin County. She is also a columnist for Nuevo Mundo, Visión Hispana and Impulso newspapers and has lectured frequently on this topic.

Adrienne Pon, Chief Executive Officer of Zeum, will also be a special guest on the Childhood Matters program. Zeum encourages youth to be informed media consumers as well as active developers of their own content. By providing an array of multimedia tools and processes, kids can create movies, animations, live performances, music videos, and visual art that reflect the world as they see it. “We’re thrilled to partner with Childhood Matters and Nuestros Niños,” says Pon. “Zeum is about placing control of both the media and the message in the hands of youth. When kids are behind the cameras, microphones or controls, they are empowered to share their unique perspectives and make their voices heard.”

The July 10th programs at Zeum are free and open to the public. Attendees who RSVP in advance will also receive free admission to Zeum for the day.
